HOW TO PREVENT A BOAT THEFT ?
To APRIL Marine, Boating Safety is not only ensuring the safety of its users, but to also protect the actual vessel. Lets discuss prevention methods that can be implemented against boat theft.
BOAT THEFT – CONTEXT
Auto theft may occur more frequently however this does not signify that boats are less targeted. Boat theft is specialized. In Quebec, one out of two hundred watercrafts is stolen every year! This is an example of a total theft. Partial thefts are much more common. For example: theft of outboard motors).
It has been proven that “Runabouts ” are more susceptible to theft. Runabouts are not only costly but easy to transport.
Let’s take a look at the circumstances regarding theft.
BOAT ON A TRAILER
Watercrafts are most frequently stolen when hooked up to their trailer.
- No locking device for trailer hitch;
- Trailer hitch is of low quality or easily circumvented;
- Trailer hitch equipped with lock but not welded to the frame;
- Absence of wheel locks.
Other risk situations:
- Watercraft moored to a pier in a resort area (at your cottage or other location) without supervision and left unprotected for several days;
- Watercraft moored in a marina with insufficient supervision;
- Watercraft for sale, on a trailer or not, on a site or land in full view. This is an invitation for theft.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THEFT ?
1. ANTI THEFT LOCKS FOR TRAILERS
This is in reference to Trailer Hitch Locks and not simple Padlocks. There are several models and related accessories on the market. We must be vigilant because some models are made of metal that can be easily broken or cut. They can also be equipped with a second quality lock that can easily be removed with a drill.
Ductile iron and stainless steel materials are the best. Avoid aluminum (or cast aluminum) because of its low melting temperature as well as the white or gray cast iron locks due to their brittleness. The lock must be fitted with a very high quality lock arrangement. Make sure that the product you buy meets all of these characteristics.
2. MARKING THE BOAT
Intensive Marking has existed for a long time as a method of protection for vehicles. Its effectiveness is proven. It involves permanent marking to identify a large number of external and mechanical parts making resale virtually impossible. The identification codes are stored in a database accessible by police authorities as well as Insurers. In addition, a prospective buyer can easily check with the marking firm to see if the vehicle has been reported stolen.
3. TRACKING SYSTEMS
Localization systems have existed for many years. Thanks to various tracking technology, vehicles and components can be identified electronically. Several companies have expanded their market to include watercrafts by developing suitable products. In case of theft, your boat may be recovered in tunnels, garages, forests as well as steel containers. This practice is generally recommended when your boat is of high value.
4. BOAT INSURANCE AS AN ALTERNATIVE
Despite all of these precautions, it would be prudent to insure your boat. In the event of a total theft, the loss can be financially burdensome. In the event of an accident, the financial risk can be detrimental. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss the various insurance products we offer:
